Apollodorus Architecture
Design by
Mark Wilson Jones & Jakub Ryng
Location
The Rec, River Avon, Bath
Capacity
c. 18,000 seats
Status
Counter-proposal, 2023

When Bath Rugby's 2023 rectangular stadium proposal was submitted for the Recreation Ground, Apollodorus Architecture responded with something altogether more ambitious: an oval amphitheatre conceived in the spirit of Rome and the Georgian city it inspired. Designed by director Mark Wilson Jones with Jakub Ryng, the counter-proposal aligns the stadium's long axis with Laura Place and Johnstone Street, introduces a terraced riverfront from North Parade Bridge to the weir, and pairs the arena with a reimagined leisure centre, all in Bath stone. Construct Media produced the full CGI suite across aerial, street, matchday, waterfront, and interior views, giving this provocation the visual weight to reach a global audience and open debate about what Bath deserves.
